Founded in 1977 by Oberon and Morning Glory Zell, the Ecosophical Research Association is the research and exploratory branch of the Church.

The ERA is dedicated to exploring the origins and actualizations of myths and legends that are pertinent to the evolution and destiny of life on this planet. After Tim Zell (now Oberon) formulated the original Gaea Thesis in the early '70s, we felt a need for a subordinate organization which was primarily concerned with mythological research. The first official ERA project was the resurrection of the Living Unicorn.

The ERA supports research in history, mythology and the natural sciences for better understanding of the intricate web of life in which we live. ERA members have gone: on Marine expiditions to Papua New Guinea; trekking into the Himalayas; pilgrimages to Machu Picchu in Peru; and quests to Delphi and Eleusus in Greece. Explorers from the ERA have also visited various archaeological sites throughout the world to probe the ancient mysteries of the oracles, ruined temples, lost civilizations, and painted caves. The ERA also maintains a constantly-growing library and collection of mythic sculptures and Goddess figurines. The ERA presents workshops and seminars on these topics.
